A PROFILE OF THE COMPUTING DEPARTMENT It is the newest department in the school, made a department with a head in 1999. A team of four permanent and two part time teachers run the centre ably. The head of department plays the role of systems manager It has now become the busiest part of the school. All teachers process lesson notes, tests and exams in the computer lab. 80% of the 60 teachers use the computer to prepare their work all the time. This is beside the students with who about 500 hours are done a week. Lessons in computing are compulsory to all first and second years. These are boys of age 12 - 14. Lessons are optional for other students. We have a very strong computer club with a membership of 40 boys. We have participated in Tele-collaborative educational projects with students from other parts of the world. All these activities put together, help equip the students with various skills in computing ranging from the basics of powering a computer to web page designing. A major limitation however, is that our computers are so old that they cannot cope with the demand put on them. The newest addition to the department is the communication satellite dish (VSAT) acquired through the World Bank sponsored SchoolNet Uganda project. This is an ICT project for schools in Uganda. This facility gives us full time Internet access. We are still getting used to the idea of having such a great resource at our school! This, we believe will change greatly our approach to the education of our students. Our aim is to make our humble contribution to building informed and technologically alert young citizens who should be able to cope better with the rapidly changing world in the fields of higher education and the job market. All this we have done and shall continue doing, "KULWA KATONDA N'EGGWANGA LYAFFE" |
